Does anybody have any experience of keeping Marmosets (Common) and Tamarins (Red-handed) together? Watching Zoo Diaries on tv the other evening, they showed Colchester Zoo keeping Red-bellied Tamarins with Common Marmosets. We have 3 Marmosets (all males unfortunately) and a single female RHT (having lost her mate). Of course, if anyone knows of any RHTs available, please let me know - I have been looking for a replacement male or additional females for nearly a year.
On the subject of Marmoset breeding, our female had young twice in the year or more that we had her. Each time she had 3 but immediately rejected one and it was dead the day of birth. The first time she and the males carried both young well until about 6 weeks and then they dropped one. Unfortnately, we only found it an hour or so later and despite hand feeding and extra care it didn't survive. The second youngster (male) has matured well. The second birth went well with two healthy youngsters surviving until, again, about week 6 (last weekend) when the female decided to go out into the outside enclosure (they have a large indoor heated area and a 12'x6'x6' outside area with trees). She and the youngster promptly dropped dead, presumably from the cold, hence we have 3 males left (her mate and two male youngsters). The second youngster was inside being carried by Dad and since it had been observed starting to eat solids and Dad did not want to give it up, we decided to let nature take its course. Unfortunately it did not survive. Keeping these small monkeys can be a traumatic experience.
Please let me know if anyone has any advice about mixing the Marms and Tam as we are concerned the RHT may get lonely. Between the Marms and Tam they have 3 outside enclosures and 2 inside ones (heated) with walkways in between the different areas to give them some interest. They also have uv light inside so do not need daylight for that reason.
Thanks
Goosemead
